It's been awhile since I posted about the Warhammer 3rd Edition campaign, so this post will just be a quick summary of the sessions spend in Bögenhafen. The following play report is vastly simplified to give a very quick overview of our (mis)adventures. The story was finished right before Christmas 2012 and started back in September 2012, but we were only playing now and then. Therefore a lot of details are missing.
When the group arrived in the city, the "Schaffenfest" was in full swing. But the group's erstwhile employer, Rickard Aschaffenberg had provided them with rooms at the "Golden Trout". The inn was run by a halfling, who was related to the landlord of the "Green Glade Inn". Since Rickard Aschaffenberg had apparently travelled to Übersreik on some business, they decided to stay until he returned, because he still owed them some money for saving him at the Grunwald Lodge.
The group decided to use the time to explore Bögenhafen, do some research regarding the book "De Naturis Demonibus" and enjoy the Schaffenfest. Volcifar was making quite a big fool out of himself, when he inquired about the book at the temple of Sigmar. In the end, he was thrown out of the temple. He fared a little bit better at the Verena temple. Here he got some answers, but not really enough to show him how to get rid of the book. He is getting a bit desperate, in case the Weaver of Fates turns out to be more than a nightmare.
Athelas and Finubaryel spend time at the Schaffenfest, but apparently elves weren't very welcome there. The market judges more or less banned them.
Lutz was feeling out the underworld of Bögenhafen. Apparently, a halfling had taken over the thieves' guild and was running a brisk business in stolen body parts (yes this is as gruesome as it sounds).
Athelas and Lutz continued to investigate the stolen body parts and found out about a cult called the "Ordo Sextenarius". Apparently, they were replacing key personages of Bögenhafen with demon-possessed constructs (or something similar). Their investigation came to a sudden halt when they confronted some sort of doctor who used demonic magic of Slaanesh against them. He fled, and they weren't able to follow.
Meanwhile, Finubaryel and Volcifar entered into a brothel called the "Red Sail", because the "Ordo Sextenarius" seemed to be headquartered there. They met Ludwig von Brunner, the son of the inquisitor Helmut von Brunner. Apparently he had fallen in love with the beautiful Esmeralda, one of the girls working at the "Red Sail". But the visit of the High Elf and the wizard's apprentice didn't turn up anything particularly suspicious.
Still, the group was suspicious and decided to invade the "Red Sail" at a special day (I don't remember which one). There they found Rickard Aschaffenberg being tortured, and Ludwig von Brunner becoming a victim in a strange ritual performed by Siegfrey Aschaffenberg (cousin of Rickard), the doctor who had escaped earlier and Esmeralda, as well as several girls working at the "Red Sail". The group didn't quite manage to disrupt the ritual that turned Esmeralda into some sort of demonette. But Athelas defeated the demonatted with her two swords and her war dances. Volcifar managed to save Ludwig von Brunner and Rickard Aschaffenberg.
In the end, Bögenhafen was saved, nobody had noticed what the player characters had accomplished, but all of them escaped with their lives. I hope that at least Rickard Aschaffenberg and Helmut Brunner will be grateful.

Meeting Jakob Bauer, Witch Hunter
Yesterday, we played another installment in our ongoing Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition campaign. Not really much did happen. The group continued to explore the Morr temple, the graveyard and a small crypt. The heroes found out that something called a dream orb had been stolen by Verne Henrick and that the missing orb was causing nightmares in the area. The priests of the temple had been gruesomely murdered, and at night all of the heroes had nightmares. Athela, Finubaryel and Lutz dreamt of being part of a zombie army attacking some castle. Volcifar received another offer by the Weaver of Fates, apparently a lieutenant of Tzeentch, to lead his armies. Volcifar flat out denied that request.
Upon returning to the Green Glade Inn, the group was told a mysterious messenger was waiting for them. The messenger turned out to be Jakob Bauer, a witch hunter from Altdorf. Apparently, anonymous source had informed him about the happenings at Grunwald Lodge. But he was a bit misinformed as to the heroes' involvement. So they correct his version of events by telling him what really happened. Volcifar even tried to turn over the chaotic book on the nature of demons, but somehow ended up with it again - only now it's warded by the inquisition. At least the group convinced him of their sincerity, so instead of travelling directly to Altdorf, the witch hunter leads the group to Bogenhaven.
The session was mostly taken up by rather unsuccessful exploration and rather successful negotiation, so newly discovered information was at a minimum and the plot also didn't develop very far.

At the Inn of the Green Glade
And now for another installment of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition actual plays:
Our heroes Finubaryel, the high elven bounty hunter, Athela, the wild elven blade dancer, Lutz, the Reiklander smuggler, and Volcifar, the Reiklander wizard's apprentice of the Grey Order have spent a night at the Green Glade Inn, run by a halfling and his two daughters. They had been escorting Lord Rickard Aschaffenberg from the burnt remains of Grunwald Lodge to Bogenhaven. During the night, Volcifar had been attacked by a Skaven, but he chased it of and went back to sleep.
Meanwhile, Lutz talked to Mona, the innkeeper's daughter. She told him about bad dreams she had been having, a strange figure with the heads of two vultures trying to talk to her. She also said, that Morr wasn't guarding her dreams anymore. After talking to Mona, Lutz found strange footsteps leading from the forest to the inn. Apparently, some beastman had walked to the inn and climbed the wall leading to Volcifar's room.
Volcifar was taken aside by Lord Aschaffenberg who wanted to know about the suicide of Astrid. He assured him that it was not a suicide and that they would try to solve the mystery surrounding her death. Also, finally he took the time to negotiated a proper payment for saving his lordship and escorting him savely to Bogenhaven.
The party of adventurers (actually swords for hire) met in Volcifar's room and exchanged information. Well, actually Volcifar was doing most of the talking. He told the group about his strange vision of Tzeentch, that he hadn't burned the book on the nature of demons, and that he had chased away a Skaven. Finubaryel, Athela and Volcifar decided to finally burn the book. Lutz choose to look around the room and the inn some more.
Lutz didn't find any trail of a wounded Skaven leading away from the inn. So he suspects that it might be hiding on the roof or in the cellar. But his search didn't turn up anything. In the room he found a strange sigil carved on the underside of the table. It seemed to be related to dreams and nightmares but neither Finubaryel nor Volcifar could make sense of it.
Volcifar and Athela tried to the burn the book and failed. Drowning it in water also failed. Therefore, Finubaryel tied knots around the book and sealed them with wax. Then Volcifar hid the book again.
Earlier, Lutz had given him the message that the wizard's apprentice had found on the body of the dead witch hunter at Grunwald Lodge. Volcifar took the time to decode the message after having a flash of insight about the code (well, the player had been doing some research). But Volcifar didn't have time yet to tell the other characters what he had deciphered.
Finubaryel talked to the innkeeper. He told her that Astrid's death was already the second suicide at the inn. The other one immolated himself. It all seemed related to the visit of a stranger that looked suspiciously like Vern Hendrick, the manservant of Lord Aschaffenberg. Before the lodge was attacked, Finubaryel told Vern to save himself and leave the lodge. Apparently, Vern wasn't as innocent as he seemed.
Everything found at the inn seemed to bear some relation to Morr, the god of death and sleep. Mona told them there was a small temple nearby. They decided to take Astrid's corpse to the temple in order to have her burried and ask the priests of Morr some questions about the strange sigil.
Arriving at the temple after a short hike of about three hours, the heroes found the cemetary to be overrun by strange diseased rats, ravens perched on the temple roof, and blood smeared inside. Finubaryel talked to a raven who gave her short answers. Apparently, they had to search for some stone that covers an entrance to the crypts.
While trying to reach the temple again, they were attacked by a swarm of rats. But managed to defeat them without sustaining any injuries. After the battle, they discovered a tombstone belonging to a certain Vern Hendrick...

Burning down the house... ah... lodge
This post continues the WFRP3 actual play reports. The last time, we left our heroes as Finubaryel had broken the illusion keeping them trapped. The characters found themselves on the rooftop of the Grunwald Lodge, facing a fire demon that was slowly materializing and the cultist summoning it.
Athelas, elven war dancer took the hammer she had found in the shrine of Sigmar and attacked the demon. The warhammer broke apart bathing the rooftop briefly in white light. The weapons of the heroes were charged and able to hurt the demon. Finubaryel attacked the demon together with Athelas. Volcifar used an illusion spell to subtly change the summoning spell that the traitorous cultist Gregor Pierceson was reading. While Lutz attacked the cultist and rammed a bottle of sleeping potion into the mouth that had replaced an eye of the cultist. The demon stuttered and his connection to the world weakened. Volcifar rammed his staff into the remaining eye of the cultist and send him sprawling to the roof. Then he methodically smashed the skull of the cultist. The fire demon was banished from the world.
The group noticed that the house beneath their feet was on fire. Athelas used a tree to escape to the ground. Lutz, Finubaryel and Volcifar went down into the third floor. Finubaryel and Volcifar in order to save their belongings, Lutz in order to save the injured people in the hospital. But the floor was already burning and the entrances to the rooms blocked. Out of the smoke came Doctor Sieger, who was a former wizard of the Bright Order. He controlled the flames and allowed Finubaryel and Volcifar to save their belongings. Volcifar discovered to his horror that the chaos tome about the beastmen was gone. Then everyone was fleeing to safety.
Outside the lodge, the survivors gathered in the woods. Not everyone had made it. But Lord Aschaffenberg was save. The heroes rested and recuperated.
The next day, the four of them went back to search the ruins of Grunwald Lodge. In the smoking ruins of the Sigmar shrine they found a secret door beneath the altar leading down into the depth of the earth. The group explored a big tunnel apparently used by Skavens. When they found the entrance to some sort of lair, they decided to turn back. The entrance was hidden behind a moving rock wall. Inside was a deep and utterly dark tunnel. Athelas became afraid of entering. Volcifar went inside to look for a mechanism to seal the entrance again. Well, he sort of found it. He stepped on a tile in the floor and the door began to close. He tried to dive out of the tunnel, but wasn't fast enough. The tunnel entrance closed and he was left in the dark with the guttering flame of his mage light.
While he was waiting for the others to free him, he found a mechanism that could operate the tunnel entrance. But it was built around a warpstone, so he didn't dare to touch it. Luckily, the others found a way to open the tunnel again. Here, Volcifar turned out to be foolish again by shouting into the tunnel: "Somebody there?" Indeed, someone was. The group heard things moving toward them. Finubaryel shot an arrow into the dark. The arrow hit something soft. In a daring move, she fired another arrow at the tile that closed the entrance. She hit it hard enough to close the door.
Then, our four heroes fled back the way they had come. Back on the surface, Finubaryel convinced Lord Aschaffenberg to travel to Bogenhaven. The group travelled by coach and arrive in the evening at the Green Glade Inn. They were greeted by a halfling innkeeper and spent a quite and restful evening at the inn. Volcifar insisted on getting his own private room, because he had some murky intentions.
After he had killed the cult leader at the Grunwald Lodge, he had taken the tome "De Naturis Daemone". This night he dared to open the tome and read a few passages in its corrupted pages. But first he was greeted by a vision of Tzeentch offering him to be the general of his armies attacking Middenheim. He gave him two months to decide on the offer. Volcifar was a bit worried, but nevertheless delved into the forbidden knowledge of the tome. He discovered a ritual for summoning a great demon that used profane artifacts of all four chaos gods. Due to earlier adventures, there is the strong possibility that the ritual had already been completed.
Then a shaken Volcifar went to bed. Later that night, he woke up when a cloaked and hooded stranger opened the shutters. Though he hurt his head, he cast a blade in the dark at the assailant. With a squeak and in a puff of green smoke the Skaven disappeared.

A Warhammer FRPG interlude at the Grunwald Lodge
In May we re-started our Warhammer FRPG 3rd edition campaign. Here is what happened at the Grunwald Lodge:
Previously, we had decided to explore the Grunwald Lodge before going to dinner. We wanted to find out, if anything strange going on at the hunting lodge. Our party consists of:
- Finubaryel Dusterhain, a high elven bounty huntress
- Athelas, a wild elven wardancer
- Lutz, a smuggler from the Reiklands
- Volcifar, a wizard's apprentice from the Grey Order
Athelas, Lutz and I decided to go to the smithy, while Finubaryel went to the hospital inside the lodge. The smithy was strangely empty and cold. Apparently, there either was no smith or he wasn't doing his work. Lutz looked over a locked chest, but found a trap and didn't really decide to open it.
As we found out later, the dwarven smith was in the hospital. He was ill. But he told Finubaryel a story about a dream visitation of a high elven wizard who commanded him to forge a warhammer. He had finished that piece of work, but then was confined to the hospital due to a strange illness.
At the hospital we also found Astrid & Helmut, two guards suffering from infected bites inflicted by beast men attacks. The resident doctor seemed to be using some new form of treatment. Instead of cauterizing the wounds, he used ointments. That seemed a bit suspicious to us. Almost, as if he didn't want the guards to heal.
Also at the hospital was the gardener who seemed to suffer from some "mild sort" of pestilence. He was kept isolated while he was slowly dying. Still, Volcifar donned something called "Shallya's garments" and went to see him. But except for making us more suspicious, the gardener didn't provide any helpful insights. The strange garments were burned by the nurse, after Volcifar returned them.
At the same time, without knowing about the story of the warhammer, Athelas visited the small Sigmar shrine. There she found a strange warhammer mounted on the wall and decided to take the heavy weapon with her. Just like elven wardancers always do...? Then she went back to the house.
Lutz had separated from the group and gotten a bit curious about the library and a hooded stranger going there. It turned out to be the librarian, and he was meeting someone else. As far as Volcifar was told, Gregor Pierceson, who was the personal attendant of the vanished Andreas Aschaffenberg. Pierceson was wearing an eye patch and looked rather like a grizzled old veteran. After the two had left the library, Lutz went in to search it. He made a rather disconcerting discovery. Two books with obvious chaotic markings, one about the nature of demons (De Naturae Demonae) and the other about chaos beasts.
After our various explorations, we met again. This time in the boys' room, shared by Lutz and Volcifar. We talked about our various discoveries. Then, Volcifar decided to go to the library and recover the chaotic books and burn them. But when he came to the library, he only found one book, the one about chaos beasts. The other volume was missing. The wizard's apprentice risked a quick look inside the book and found a small ritual about summoning beast men. Growing highly suspicious, he left the library to return to the upstairs room. The book was securely wrapped in his cloak. Only he did not notice the dark shadow following him...
Note: This was the end of the second game session at Grunwald Lodge. The next session followed one week later. I was planning on covering the events of that evening of gaming in the same post. But my gamemaster decided to sidetrack me with Diablo 3 and a the preparations for a multi-player session. :( So the follow-up post will be a bit delayed.

Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play 3rd Edition
Something I would like to mention here, even though it is neither Lamentations nor old-school. Yesterday, a friend of mine started a Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay campaign using the 3rd Edition rules. The game was fun. We are still trying to get the hang of all the fiddly bits and rules, but it was an entertaining evening.
Still, I think WFRP pertains a bit to this blog, since Lamentations gives of a similar vibe as WFRP in some places. Also, I like the mechanic of the party sheet. In essence, the player characters form a themed adventuring party. The party sheet measures party tension (nifty), allows the referee to award fortune points (similar to bennies, fate points or the proposed hero points of this blog) to the group, and gives the players the ability to share some their characters' capabilities with the group.
So, what happened yesterday? We are a company of Swords for Hire (our party sheet) who are just returning from Black Fire Pass where we were part of an imperial army fighting against orcs and goblins. The party consists of a wood elven wardancer, a high elven bounty hunter, and two Reiklanders, a smuggler and a wizard's apprenctice of the Grey Order (illusionists). While travelling to Ubersreik on the day before Geheimnistag, we encountered an over-turned coach (why do almost all WFRP adventures and campaigns I ever played in start with raided coaches?) Apparently, it had been raided by beast men. Our elves thought that there were around 12 persons travelling with the coach. We didn't find any bodies. So we assume that they ended up as beast men lunch. A bit apart, concealed by the bushes the wood elf found an injured servant. He was carrying a marriage contract between two noble families. When he was revived, he told us that he was travelling back to his master with the contract. They were attacked almost before the end of the journey. Our smuggler had the idea of building a small cart out of the remains of the coach to have an easier time carrying the servant to the nearby hunting lodge.
On our way to the hunting lodge, we were attacked by a group of four smaller beastmen and their larger leader. We fought valiantly and after the wardancer killed the leader, the three remaining bestmen fled. Not a moment too soon. In the distant, a hunting horn already announced another pack of beastmen approaching. We ran toward the hunting lodge. Our wizard's apprentice was wondering why the beastman leader had tried to specifically kill the servant. Thanks to our smuggler he did not succeed.
At the hunting lodge we were greeted by Lord Aschaffenberg. He seemed rather jovial and congratulated us on defeating the beastmen (why didn't he help us?). The high elven bounty hunter noticed that someone was watching our arrival from a first floor window. We were invited to stay and share dinner with our host. Our host told us that Andreas Aschaffenberg, his brother, vanished here a year and a day earlier. All in all, considering the events, the lord seemed to be a bit unconcerned for my tastes. At that, we became a bit suspicious. We convened in the girls' room (the high elf and the wood elf) and shared our various suspicions. There might be some mastermind directing the beastmen, tomorrow is Geheimnistag (a day where the undead are roaming) and our arrival had been observed by some unknown person.
We decided that the smuggler should scout the room where the observer was most likely hidden. There, he found a doctor's study with a curious skeleton and a box of sleeping potions under the bed. Meanwhile the wizard's apprenctice was taking a bath.
Later we met again and decided that not all of us should eat dinner. The high elf volunteered for that. The wizard's apprentice plans to make his food look like he has eaten some, but in reality he'll not eat at all. Also, we decided that sitting in our rooms is not getting us anywhere. Instead, we should scout the estate. Here we finished the game yesterday.
